As an esthetician, one of the most common questions I’m asked about a service is “can I have this done while I’m pregnant?” And that is an excellent question, because as your body is undergoing radical change during pregnancy, so is the list of products + ingredients you can safely use!
Skin is our largest organ, and what absorbs through it into the bloodstream can impact a growing baby’s development. With that in mind, your favorite pre-pregnancy brow and beauty services might need to be put on pause while you’re expecting and/or breastfeeding! Some are a definite no-no due to the chemicals used or potential risk of infection, and others can still be done but might not have as long-lasting of results because of your hormonal changes.
As always, be sure to check with your doctor first about their recommendations, but this list is my rule of thumb for that well-deserved prenatal pampering:
Pregnancy-Safe Esthetics Services
Brow waxing - and thank goodness, because hair grows at a much faster rate while pregnant!
Brow tinting/henna - in the 3rd trimester only
Lash lifting - a favorite for just ahead of baby’s arrival to give your eyes an extra pop before those sleepless nights!
Spray tanning - must use a disposable nose filter
Dermaplaning - minus the AHA/BHA prep solution used to degrease the skin before the procedure
Prenatal facials + massages- I’m happy to give you referrals for great facialists and massage therapists in the area!
Services to Discontinue During Pregnancy
Microblading
Brow lamination
You’ll need to wait ~3 months after giving birth or finishing breastfeeding to have either done!
+Some products to discontinue during pregnancy: lash + brow growth serums (including castor oil), chemical sunscreens (look for zinc oxide on the label instead), Vitamin A/retinol, salicylic and glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone, and makeup containing talc.
